Regal and Royal Hawaiian Quilts at the Honolulu Academy of Arts

Hawaiian quilt making is a world renowned form of art. Missionaries first brought woven fabrics to the islands in the early 1800s and taught the Hawaiian people how to make patchwork quilts. Over the years, these quilts have served as canvasses for intricate artwork or island storytelling and the expression of political views. On display now through June 17, 2012 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts (aka Honolulu Museum of Art) are 11 prized Hawaiian quilts featuring distinctive floral designs and dramatic color combinations.

Pictured is a highlight of the Regal and Royal Hawaiian quilt collection -- Kuu Hae Aloha (My Beloved Flag) -- a tribute to the short-lived Kingdom of Hawaii.

Beginning April 1^st, the Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Restaurant and Merchandise Shop will be closed temporarily during their move to a new location within the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace.

The Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Restaurant and Merchandise Shop will be moving to the third floor of the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace.

The Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Merchandise Shop is scheduled to reopen on April 2^nd, 2012 for both voucher redemptions and for the merchandise offer available with the Las Vegas Power Pass.

The Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Restaurant will reopen for dining as soon as the move and renovation is complete. The restaurant reopening is tentatively scheduled for April 15th.

Free Performances by Royal Hawaiian Band at ‘Iolani Palace

Dating back to 1836 and founded by King Kamehameha III, the Royal Hawaiian Band has been entertaining the people of Hawaii and around the world for over 175 years. While the heart of the band is traditional Hawaiian music, its concerts feature all types: marches, pop, Broadway musicals, standards and orchestral transcriptions. Hear the classics “Hukilau” and “Sophisticated Hula,” among others, and enjoy the closing performance of Queen Liliuokalani’s famed “Aloha Oe.” Free shows by the Royal Hawaiian Band are held on the Palace grounds on most Fridays (weather permitting) from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.

Judy Kawabata Exhibition at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai’i

Judy Kawabata: An Artful Life Exhibition

Local artist Judy Kawabata, known for the beautiful tile murals she created and has affixed to the walls of many of Oahu’s public schools, as well as her pottery and shibori (the art of dyeing) fabric designs, will be featured in an exhibit of her work through the years that runs through March 16, 2012 at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai’i. A retired elementary school teacher, some of Ms. Kawabata’s art is housed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Many of her favorite pieces will be on display at the exhibit, including ceramics, textiles, watercolors and murals.

Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art to Reopen With ‘Claude Monet: Impressions of Light’

The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of Claude Monet: Impressions of Light on Saturday, February 18, 2012.

Claude Monet: Impressions of Light will be on display at this popular Las Vegas art museum until January 2013.

Organized in partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (MFA), this landmark exhibition will feature works that illustrate the height of Claude Monet’s engagement with color and light. Claude Monet: Impressions of Light will showcase 20 works by Monet, the founder of French Impressionist painting, as well as 8 other canvases form Monet’s predecessors and contemporaries. All of these works are drawn from the collection of the MFA, which holds one of the largest groups of paintings by Monet outside of Paris.

Please note that The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art’s business hours have changed. The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art will now be open daily from 10am to 8pm, with last admission at 7:30.

New Elephant Habitat Opens at the Honolulu Zoo

Mari and Vaigai, the Honolulu Zoo’s two resident female elephants from India, have a new habitat to call home. Following a $12 million renovation, the Zoo’s new elephant habitat is 10 times larger than the old, providing more roaming and exercise space, crucial to maintaining the animals’ health. New trees and plants have been added, along with two 50,000 gallon swimming pools that allow the elephants to splash, play and cool off in the water. Other improvements are ongoing and there are plans to introduce a third elephant (male) for breeding purposes, so in the future we can look forward to seeing some baby elephants!

The Honolulu Power Pass includes free admission to the Honolulu Zoo. Open daily, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed on Christmas Day).
