Things To Do On Oahu During The Holidays

Spending the holidays on Oahu?  Then you don’t need to pack more than a pair of flip flops, a few pairs of shorts and some tank tops!  There are lots of things to see and do during this very festive time of the year, even if there is no snow!

Don’t miss the Honolulu City Lights, for one!  From now through December 30, Honolulu Hale (530 King Street) is the place to be, decked out in magnificent Christmas wreaths and bathed in thousands of flickering lights, surrounded by giant holiday decorations and characters.  Inside the Hale are exquisite Christmas trees, each one decorated with a different theme, as well as many intricate holiday displays.  Great fun for kids and adults alike.  To get there, just hop on the  Waikiki Trolley  or, if you’d rather rent a bicycle or moped, stop by  Hawaiian Style Rentals  , admission to both of which are free with the Honolulu Power Pass card.

Since you probably won’t be heading to the Honolulu City Lights until dark, you might want to spend the afternoon right next door at opulent  Iolani Palace  , built in 1882 by King Kalakaua, and immerse yourself in the history of Hawaii’s monarchy.  A guided tour of the Palace is another included attraction on the Honolulu Power Pass card.

Now through December 24, the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach (2335 Kalakaua Avenue) displays the sweet gingerbread concoctions of its culinary staff.  These creative gingerbread works of art are free for public viewing.

Now through December 25, experience Waikiki Beach Walk’s Countdown to Christmas, with daily free holiday entertainment from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

If you’re ready to hit the water, just a few blocks away is  Waikiki Shore Beach Service  , where you can pick up a surfboard, beach gear, or lounge chair, table and umbrella.   For the more adventurous at heart, book a thrilling ride on the  Maita’i Catamaran  at its Waikiki Beach kiosk (between the Halekulani and Sheraton Waikiki hotels) or by calling them for a reservation.   Both of these attractions are free with the Honolulu Power Pass card.

Through December 25, joyous Christmas carols performed by the Honolulu Madrigal Quartet can be heard from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Royal Hawaiian lobby (2259 Kalakaua Avenue).

World champion sand sculptor Thomas Koet and his partner, Jill Harris, display three 7-foot Santa –inspired creations now through January 2 in the Sheraton Waikiki lobby (2255 Kalakaua Avenue).

Each year, Chef Ralf Bauer wows us with his traditional Christmas gingerbread village, currently on display daily through January at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani (120 Kaiulani Avenue).  Made of 70 pounds of white chocolate, 100 pounds of dark chocolate, 200 gallons of icing and lots and lots of gingerbread, it is indeed a sweet sight to behold.

Follow the sounds of the tribal drums to  Big Kahuna’s 3D Glow Golf  , just a short walk from the Sheraton Princess.  Don your 3D glasses and make your way through active volcanoes, dense jungles and glistening waterfalls as you traverse this family friendly mini golf course.  Free admission with the Honolulu Power Pass card.

Just a hop, skip and a jump away is the  Honolulu Zoo  , where you can spend the day amidst lions, tigers, cheetahs, giraffes, exotic birds, mammals and reptiles.  Free admission for Honolulu Power Pass card holders.  Open every day except December 25.

If you happen to be doing some holiday shopping at Ala Moana Center, don’t forget to hop aboard the Candy Cane Train, see the free holiday musical shows, and take photos with jolly old St. Nick.  And while there, be sure to pop into Macy’s to pick up your  Macy’s Power Shopper  goodies, free with the Honolulu Power Pass card.

If you’re on Oahu on New Year’s Eve, watch the sky light up on Waikiki Beach at the Hilton Hawaiian Village’s (2005 Kalia Road) New Year’s Eve fireworks spectacular beginning at 8:00 p.m.

Another fireworks show blasts off on world famous Waikiki Beach at midnight and can be seen from pretty much anywhere on Kalakaua Avenue.

Ring in 2011 at the New Year’s Eve 2010 Party of the Year at Aloha Tower Marketplace, featuring a huge block party with dancing, entertainment and food on seven different stages.  One cover charge gives you access to all seven stages.  Tickets are $20, and VIP access is $50.  The highlight of the evening is the exciting midnight fireworks display over Honolulu Harbor, the island’s largest.  You must be at least 21 to participate in this event.

Wishing you all the best for a happy holiday season and a wonderful 2011.   Mele Kalikimaka and Hauoli Makahiki Hou!
